David Boulogne
Inadequates

T1
+ 2 Artspace is happy to present Inadequates by David
Boulogne. This exhibition of C-type digital prints is comprised
in the main of a number of large-scale mis en scene portraits
of highly distinctive individuals.
Incoherence and the unconventional pervade these works. Model,
gaze and physical location form a conflicting, awkward whole,
their subjects becoming lost within the overwhelming scale of
the image. We feel that these people's attention is held by something
squarely located outside the shot. A kind of "essence"
of each individual is nevertheless caught on camera. In unmasking
the artificial and the bluntly materialistic a clarity of perception
is achieved and maintained.
Boulogne reveals to us a contradictory, isolated moment in another
person's life. Appearing unable or unwilling to hold to conventional
social constraints, these "marginal" characters have
in fact chosen to occupy vividly legible, if somewhat disturbing
positions or roles. Yet it is our own carefully composed quirks
and personas that Boulogne's pictures raise for attention. That
which initially seemed alien or threatening is finally seen to
be intensely, intimately similar to ourselves.
Originally from France, Boulogne has lived in London for the past
five years. He studied at the Sorbonne, Paris, and the Gobelins-Ecole
de l’Image.
